It’s the end of the month, which means it’s once again time to dig into our sales data and check out some bike trends. If it’s your first time here, TPC carries more brands and models than any other bike retailer. We sell hundreds of new and Certified Pre-Owned bikes every week. This puts us in a unique position to see how different bike models stack up. Spring is finally here, and March is when the riding season really starts heating up. Let’s find out what bikes are looking hot now that the snow’s melting.

2. Specialized Tarmac
3. Trek Madone

The Trek Domane endurance bike has held onto the top spot for another month. It was a close fight with the ever-popular Tarmac, but the Domane just edged out the Specialized. Trek had a great showing with the Madone aero bike rounding out the podium. The Giant TCR Advanced is a regular in the top 5 and this month just pipped the Orbea Orca that had tied it last month.

    Best-selling mountain bikes

    1. Orbea Occam
    2. Specialized Stumpjumper
    3. Rocky Mountain Altitude
    4. Orbea Oiz
    5. Rocky Mountain Element

I wasn’t sure it would ever happen, but a bike finally beat the nearly unbeatable Specialized Stumpjumper. The Orbea Occam trail bike has been gaining steam for a while, and it managed to outsell the Stumpy by several units. A well-deserved win. With the Oiz XC bike, Orbea managed to get two bikes in the top five. Rocky Mountain also got two models in the top five with its Enduro World Series-winning Altitude and the recently redesigned “downcountry” Element.

    Best-selling gravel/cyclocross bikes

    1. Orbea Terra
    2. Rocky Mountain Solo
    3. 3T Exploro
    4. Trek Boone
    5. Specialized Diverge

With so many affordable aluminum builds in stock this last month, it’s no surprise that the Orbea Terra and Rocky Mountain Solo dominated the gravel category. Many builds are in the $2-3,000 range, making them hot prospects for budget-conscious riders. The big surprise to me was the popularity of the 3T Exploro (this includes the original and newer RaceMax models). It looks like these Italian Aero weapons are finally hitting a price point where waiting buyers are eagerly snapping them up.

    Best-selling E-bikes

    1. Orbea Rise
    2. Trek Super Commuter+
    3. Trek Powerfly FS
    4. Look E765 Optimum
    5. Specialized Turbo Creo

    [product-block handle="2022-orbea-rise-m20-20mph-m-blu-reg-1"/]

The Orbea Rise trounced the competition this month. Nothing else came close. It’s a lower-power lightweight E-MTB similar to the Specialized Turbo Levo SL, and riders are clearly digging the slim and lightweight design. This is also the first appearance of the Trek Powerfly Full-Suspension. It seems the shredders are emerging from hibernation. The other newcomer is the Look E765 Optimum road bike, which managed to beat the super-popular Turbo Creo. It comes in a gravel version too that just missed the top five.

    Interesting stat snacks for March

Orbea had a bike appear in the top 5 of every category and took the top spot for mountain, gravel, and e-bikes. I’ve said it before, but Orbea is seriously on the rise. I’m starting to see their bikes in the wild more often, and when I mention them, most riders know who they are. They’re one of our most popular brands and they’re likely on a trajectory to start battling it out with the big established American brands like Specialized, Trek, and Cannondale. Orbea has been around longer than any of them, so it’s probably about time!

In the mountain bike world, it was an unusually poor showing from American brands like Yeti, Santa Cruz, and Ibis. None had bikes in the top 10. The Canadians are stealing their thunder. Rocky Mountain dominated with 4 models, the Altitude, Element, Instinct, and Fusion in the top 10. The Forbidden Druid made it too, placing 8th overall this month. An impressive feat for such a tiny manufacturer.

The Trek Domane was the best overall seller last month, but despite placing first in road bikes again, it was eclipsed in overall sales by the Orbea Rise E-MTB. I seriously can’t believe how many Rises went out the door. I don’t have a strong opinion on E-bikes, but if I were to own and ride an E-MTB, I’d probably choose a lightweight model like the Rise. I’ve tested it before, and the smaller motor and light weight actually make trail riding feel more natural. It’s more similar to riding and maneuvering a normal bike. It seems our buyers like that too.
